The Dragon’s Keep — Illuminated Fantasy Sculpture

Welcome to The Dragon’s Keep. At first glance, an enormous weathered boot appears to have become home to a wonderfully peculiar fantasy dwelling. A towering mushroom rises overhead, tiny windows glow from within, flowers and fungi creep across the structure and a miniature doorway waits at the top of a winding set of steps. But wait... something seems to be trying to emerge from where, I’m almost certain, it was zipped closed only a moment ago. Through the opening, a single dragon’s eye stares out from within. Whatever has been contained inside The Dragon’s Keep appears to have decided that containment is no longer part of the arrangement. Created using mixed-media, fabric sculpting and Powertex techniques, this large one-of-a-kind sculpture has been constructed and finished entirely by hand. Layers of sculptural texture, rich earthy colours, metallic pigments and intricate embellishments transform the piece from every angle, with tiny details hidden throughout the dwelling and surrounding landscape. Soft illumination from the windows brings the Keep to life after dark, adding warmth to the strange little world above while something altogether larger watches from beneath. Whimsical from one angle and slightly unsettling from another, The Dragon’s Keep is a piece designed to be explored — because the longer you look, the more of its story begins to reveal itself.
